The 4-1-1 on Buying Resell Rights Products

In my opinion, resell rights products are absolutely one of the quickest and easiest ways to make some money online.

I’ve said it before but it is worth repeating because there is still a lot of people really dissing it.

Since MOST successful people started that way the facts say otherwise but… well, what can I say, some people…

Sure resell rights products can be WAY over-hyped, sometimes to the level of deception, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a good thing to do. On to the good stuff.

What to Look For

In previous posts, I talked about what you’d really gotta have when you getting resell rights products to sell to your customers.

In short you want:

  1. A quality product to sell
  2. A well done sales page
  3. Other sales material

BUT… Is that it? Get that and you’ll be calling that Beverly Hills real estate agent? Hardly? Now, put that phone down and read on. Here’s what to do BEFORE buying…

1. Anyone Interested

Do some keyword research on keywords (what else?) related to the product.

Go to Google’s free tool at https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal or the free WordTracker tool at http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/.

If you find a market all hot for solution you’re looking to provide, that is, a good number of searches for terms you related to the resell rights product, then things are looking good.

Now, go to Google Trends and see how those important keywords have been doing over time. You don’t want any “fad of the day” stuff (unless you are trying to tap into that fad for short term profit).

Does the market look “frosty” (not a lot of searches) then it is walk, no run, away from it. You can try the more investigation in case the topic/product is “weird” but the likelihood is that it would be a hard product to sell.

2. Anyone Buying?

Now that you have found some positive signs you need to see if those people who are searching are actually buying.

People “looking who ain’t buying” aren’t your kind of person; you want people with lots of cash to spend.

There are several ways to get a sense of you’re seeing buyers or “loiterers”.

First, go to Google and do a search on hot keywords you found. Now, this is what you want to see in the results:

  • How many AdWords ads do you see on the right and very top (look through multiple pages of results)? If you find lots of them then people are likely to be buying; and that is good for you!
  • Look at the actual “organic” search results and see if you find people selling the same product as what you are considering purchasing. Look at the sales pages and see what they look like. Look at what they’re selling the product for. Note the similarities and the differences.

Now, go to Clickbank and look for products that might be your “competitors”. Look for:

  • How many products are there like the one you’re looking at?
  • How close are they to the product that you are looking at?
  • How many sales are they getting? Look at their gravity to get a rough sense of this — it isn’t 100% accurate but it is a rough comparison to other Clickbank products.
  • Also, look at http://www.cb-analytics.com to see some analysis of the Clickbank products over time.

3. Does it Have the Rights You Need?

You need to understand what the EXACT rights you are getting along with the product. This is super important because no matter how many people are buying,

if you don’t have rights to sell it, then it is worthless product to you. Always be on this like, well … be on it!

However, there is a problem.

Most sales pages (and even some products) do not tell you the exact rights you get and it is common to purchase products that you can’t actually use the way you planned to.

Sure, they’ll tell you that it comes with Master Resell Rights (MRR) or Private Label Rights (PLR) but the variations within how those terms are used are so great that it becomes almost worthless

4. How Many Copies Are Available?

Most resell rights products don’t limit the number of copies they will sell. Is this important?

Well, here it comes… it depends.

At best, about 2% of the people who buy a product actually sell it so it isn’t as important as you might think.

But, for certain products, or for products that have been around for a while, this can dilute the market making it harder to sell.

Having lots of people selling something can be a real advantage if you can differentiate yourself and provide some real unique value though.

Not something “newbies” or “lazies” usually do but something for you to aim for.

What to Watch Out For?

Other than making sure there is a market there’s not much you can watch out for because you can’t actually see and touch the product before you buy it.

However, be careful of those deals that are “too good to be true.” You know, those deals where you get 250 “new” products for $27 (well they were new in 2004 :-)

This might sound strange coming from me given my monthly 8-8-8Sale.com sale where you can get 8 rights products for only $8.88 (available for 88 hours and 8 minutes).

I buy and use mostly resell rights products in my sales, but I try to screen them for quality and I buy and reject a lot more products that I sell.

And those are truly limited time sales, afterwards they sell for $37 and sell at that price (just last week I earned almost $400 from that site and I don’t really do any promotion).

Anyway, not everyone is so conscientious and, to be blunt, they are just trying to get your cash. So, as they say, it’s Buyer Beware.

In general, there are 4 primary reasons how you can get ripped off:

  1. The quality is bad (to be polite!)
  2. The product is “stolen”. By that I mean they don’t have the proper rights to sell the product to you. Which means you don’t have the rights to sell it either.
  3. The product is outdated. I don’t mean old. Being old is not necessarily being outdated. A product that was released 6 months ago can be outdated. Being old isn’t bad, being outdated is.
  4. You didn’t get the rights you need (and were promised).

What Can You Do to Protect Yourself?

  1. Look for that 100% money back guarantee and ask for refunds (and hope you get them!) if you don’t like what you get.
  2. Get the exact rights before you purchase. Some people, like myself, show you the licensed rights directly on the sales page. If you don’t see that then write to them and ask for it.
  3. Buy from reputable sources.
  4. Look for reviews and forum comments on the product and the Web site you are purchasing from. Lots of complaints over time means something is wrong (make sure the complaints are current though).
  5. Testimonials can help but they some are fake. I learned this in a “past life” when I had involvement with very large product launches for very large companies using very large advertising agencies. It was just given and accepted that the testimonials would be made up by the ad agencies with approval from the company.

Are There Exceptions?

My products (8-8-8 Sale and others) are exceptions.

You’re saying “Sure, of course you’ll say that. How shamelessly self-serving.” That doesn’t negate the truth though.

Other people that I have found who seem honest from my experience with them and that provide very good value for the money are: Todd Gross, Ken Reno, the W-cube’s (Wacky Wednesday women), the Champigny’s, Matthew Griffin, Greg’s Frugal Friday and a few others I don’t recall right now. We’ll look more into this next time.

The Bottom Line

Use resell rights to earn money and grow your business but be careful.

Make sure there is an actual market of buyers for the product.

Make sure you get the rights you need.

Make sure you can get traffic to your site.

Don’t be shy to ask for a refund if the product isn’t for you.
